Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, CON, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, urging citizens to remain united, vigilant, and committed to the ideals that underpin democratic governance.
In a message released by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Victor Oshioke, Senator Oshiomhole paid glowing tribute to the heroes of democracy who fought tirelessly and, in many cases, made the ultimate sacrifice for the realization of democratic rule in Nigeria. He particularly honored Chief M.K.O. Abiola, whose courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy are being celebrated today through the observance of June 12 as Democracy Day.
The Senator also saluted numerous pro-democracy activists who continue to contribute to nation-building and the strengthening of democratic institutions. He singled out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as one of the leading figures of the June 12 struggle, noting that the President played a pivotal role in the fight to restore democracy and is today implementing policies aimed at ensuring that the dividends of democracy are felt by all and sustained for generations to come.
Senator Oshiomhole emphasized that the democracy Nigerians enjoy today was not handed to the nation on a platter of gold but was won through struggle, resilience, and sacrifice.
He noted that every generation is faced with its own challenges and that it is through the struggle to overcome such challenges that men and women of capacity, character, and courage distinguish themselves. According to him, the present generation is equally confronted with challenges, and it is through patriotic actions and consistency in standing for truth and justice that history will judge how Nigerians responded to the demands of their time. He stressed that the choices made today will determine how future generations remember us.
The Senator therefore called on the youth to play their part in sustaining democracy by rejecting actions capable of undermining the rule of law and respect for constituted authority which are fundamental pillars of democratic governance.
He further urged all Nigerians to stand together in defense of the nation’s unity, peace, and security.
“Together, we will triumph over those who threaten the peace and security of our beloved nation.” he said.
Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria!
