Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has called out fellow lawmakers over the reported maltreatment of NYSC members during their mandatory service year.

The former Edo State Governor did not hold back in his criticism, describing such actions by some public officials as “scandalous, shameful, and unbefitting of national leaders.” He emphasized that the NYSC scheme was designed to foster unity and national development—not to expose young graduates to abuse and indignity.

“It is disgraceful that while these young men and women leave their families and comfort zones to serve their country, some who are in positions of authority treat them with disdain. This behavior must stop,” Oshiomhole declared during a recent Senate plenary.

He called for immediate reforms to improve the welfare and working conditions of corps members, including the provision of proper accommodation, safety, and remuneration. Oshiomhole also urged the NYSC Directorate and relevant federal ministries to enforce disciplinary action against any institution or individual found guilty of abusing corps members.

This bold stance has drawn applause from across the country, particularly from youth groups and civil society organizations who view Oshiomhole’s defense of corps members as timely and courageous.

“As a former student activist and labour leader, I will continue to speak up for the vulnerable and ensure justice is done,” he added.

The senator’s intervention has renewed national conversation around the treatment of NYSC participants and sparked calls for a broader review of the scheme to ensure it remains effective, safe, and impactful.
