As family, friends, political associates, wellwishers mark another significant milestone in the life of former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Aliyu Eric Oshiomhole, it is fitting to reflect on a journey defined by resilience, courage, and an unrelenting commitment to the cause of the common man.

At 74, Oshiomhole stands not merely as a politician, but as a symbol of principled leadership forged in the crucible of struggle. His story is not one of privilege, but of purpose one that began in the factory halls of Arewa Textile in Kaduna, where he first found his voice as an advocate for workers’ rights. Without seeking recognition or office, he emerged as a rallying point for oppressed workers, driven by an instinctive sense of justice and fairness.
It was this authenticity that endeared him to the labour movement and led to his emergence as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). In that role, he became a national figure, known for his courage, clarity, and refusal to compromise on issues affecting Nigerian workers. His leadership was not imposed it was earned through trust, consistency, and sacrifice.

Oshiomhole’s eventual transition into partisan politics did not dilute his ideals; rather, it amplified them. His governorship journey in Edo State began with a fierce legal and popular battle to reclaim what had been unjustly taken from him. When he eventually assumed office, he justified the faith reposed in him by the people, delivering governance that prioritized infrastructure, education, and human capital development. To this day, his tenure remains a reference point in discussions around impactful and people-oriented leadership.

His tenure as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) further reinforced his reputation as a man unwilling to bend to political convenience. At a time of intense internal party contestations, Oshiomhole demonstrated a rare firmness, refusing to sacrifice his convictions for political survival. His removal from office, which was without doubt politically motivated, underscored the price often paid by those who resist control and insist on principle.
Notably, his stance during the political dynamics leading up to the 2023 presidential election, particularly his alignment with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reflected his enduring loyalty and ideological consistency. Yet, rather than retreat from public life, Oshiomhole returned stronger, buoyed once again by the support of the people.

Today, as the Senator representing Edo North, he continues to demonstrate the same vigor and fearlessness that have defined his public life. On the floor of the Senate, he remains vocal, engaged, and committed to advancing policies that reflect the interests of his constituents and the broader Nigerian populace.

At 74, Oshiomhole is not slowing down. His presence in national discourse remains significant, his voice resonant, and his commitment unwavering. He embodies a rare blend of activism and governance, an individual who has consistently bridged the gap between advocacy and action.

As Oshiomhole would always say, when he became President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, he believed that after his two tenures he would have achieved his purpose and retire to a quiet life. Then came the opportunity to be Governor of Edo State and the overwhelming support of the people. After his two terms as governor, he again thought he would retire to a quiet life. Then came the opportunity to become National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress. After his removal, he thought that this was it that he would now retire quietly. Yet, once again, came the call to serve as Senator, and here he is today representing his people. Who knows what opportunity awaits him next? Only God knows. What remains constant, however, is his conviction that whatever position he finds himself in, he will continue to use it to advocate and work tirelessly in the interest of the Nigerian people.

Here is wishing the “Authentic Comrade” and “Father of Modern Edo State” a Happy 74th Birthday and many more active years of standing up for the Nigerian people.
